My favorite summer jam, this year, is Wild Nothing’s “Chinatown.” The melody is beautiful and quite nostalgic as well.

“Out On The Tiles” Led Zeppelin III

It may sound unoriginal but this classic rock ditty trounces all in its wake for summer faves.  The intro opens up the roof of your T-Top ‘86 Firebird and the drums are supremely off-kilter groovy.

“sister” by vetiver takes me back to the summer of ‘88 when my sister ran away after getting busted pulling a bong in our basement during a post-finals party. i spent many afternoons that summer sitting on a rocking chair listening to stevie nicks and zeppelin wondering where the hell she was, hoping she wasn’t dead (she wasn’t - she was just tripping her brains out following the dead). ah, the feelings this song evokes are all too real…

my summer jams are both called “I LIKE IT.”
one is by the emotions because its cute and flirtatious and warm like a summer day.
the other is by debarge. its smooth silky n sexy like a summer sunset.

90125 by Yes, the whole album.
Of course it’s got “Owner of a Lonely Heart” on it so there’s a jam right off the bat, but its also got the the futuristic fantasy instrumental of “Cinema” which leads into the amazing vocal layering of “Leave It”, and that’s only 3 tracks.

Why’s it my summer jam?  The music glistens.  Trever Horn is at the top of his game on music production in this album (and he was a member of the band at the time).  His album production defined the artpop of the 80s and that generation of music’s sound was MADE for a summer day.  Humidity rising from the wet earth, trees rusting, crashing waves, sea breezes and summer storms.  This music coasts along with all of it.

People isolate their music inwards too much these days.  A society of earbuds.  It’s good at times, but closes the music off from the world.  I feel that music needs to interact with the environment, even if it’s just as simple as bringing a boom box to a park.  The music GROWS from interfacing with the world around it.  The vibrations and harmonies find their way towards the rocks, the leaves, the soil.  The simple sound of a singing voice is so seldom given to the outside world anymore.  90125 is music I’d play form an open car window on the most humid day, to the beach in a boom box, on the deck of a boat, anywhere - and I wouldn’t just be glad that I was hearing it, but that the world was hearing it and being enhanced by it.
